The discovery of a war veteran's secret stash of artillery shells sparked a huge bomb scare in Trafford. Nicki Connor was clearing out her late father's house in Altrincham on Saturday with family friend Scott Sawyer when she came across the munitions hidden in a plastic tub on the garden patio.
She said her dad Daniel Connor MBE, a former Sgt Major and weapons expert in the Royal Artillery, must have collected the shells during his 30-year career in the armed forces.
Homes were evacuated and 100m cordon put in place as the bomb squad raced to the scene after the four shells were discovered on Avocet Drive in Broadheath just after noon today.
It's thought they were taken away around 6pm before a controlled explosion was carried out in a nearby farmer's field. READ MORE: Manchester Piccadilly passengers told 'do not travel' due to major rail disruption Nicki said: "I picked the tub up and it had water in and I was emptying it out.
