EXCLUSIVE: Deadline has learned that 7x Primetime Emmy nominee Will Arnett has stepped in for Armie Hammer on Searchlight Pictures’ soccer comedy Next Goal Wins directed by Oscar winner Taika Waititi. From what we understand, Waititi held reshoots and Hammer wasn’t available.
The role that Hammer was playing, which Arnett took over, was that of an executive at the Football Federation American Samoa.
The movie follows an infamously terrible American Samoa soccer team, known for a brutal 2001 FIFA match where they lost 31-0.
With the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (played by Michael Fassbender) hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around.
