Cases of a highly contagious disease known as the '100-day cough' are spreading rapidly across the nation - and our map shows the hardest hit areas.
So far this year the health authorities have received notifications of 1,141 cases of Whooping Cough. That’s 26% more than the previous two years combined.
The bacterial infection - also known as pertussis - starts with cold-like symptoms but can lead to severe coughing fits lasting up to three months.
Because of these long-lasting symptoms, it is sometimes called the 100-day cough. Manchester is the Greater Manchester borough with the highest rates in 2023, followed by Trafford, Bury, and Rochdale.
