Most people will probably recognise New Year's Eve as 31 December, but there are different cultures and traditions across the globe who celebrate the beginning of a new year at different times.

While Western cultures follow the Gregorian calendar, many cultures across Asia follow the Lunar calendar, which is based on the cycles of the Moon's phases.

Lunar New Year typically falls around the end of January and celebrations can last around two weeks. While the Gregorian calendar is based on the Earth's orbit around the Sun, which results in a year of 365 days, or 366 in leap years, the Lunar calendar follows the moon's orbit around the earth and lasts approximately 354 days.

In Western cultures, New Year's Eve is celebrated on the same day each year, whereas Lunar New Year falls on different dates.
