Scots have been warned over ‘friend in need’ message scams that have swept across the UK in recent months. The messages sees scammers pose as a family member or friend in a bid to steal personal information or money from the victim.
A study found that more than half (59 per cent) of people have been on the receiving end of a message-based scam or know someone who has.
WhatsApp has teamed up with National Trading Standards to raise awareness and educate people about these scams.The “Stop Think Call” campaign is urging Scots to take time in responding to any messages they believe to be dodgy, think about the request and verify that it is a loved one who has sent the message by phoning them or asking to hear a voice note.
