The image of the letter Z has now become a chilling symbol of the Russian aggression in Ukraine. First thought to be a pragmatic emblem for Putin's military tactics the letter has since appeared on social media as well on the chest of a Russia athlete during the Winter Paralympics.
The symbol was first seen smeared on the sides of tanks as they made their way into Ukrainian territory with other letters including V, A, X and O appearing alongside.The lettering was initially thought to have two important roles.
The first was to mark out Russian equipment in order to allow easy identification when mixing with very similar Ukrainian vehicles.
The markings were also thought to indicate where that equipment was destined for or where it originated from, reports The Mirror.
