had launched spring sales in time for reopening. Alongside John Lewis, the flagship stores of Footlocker and Nike were the most popular: queues hundreds of people had begun forming hours before the stores were due to open.

Scenes weren’t entirely dissimilar to when retail stores reopened back in June 2020 following the first national lockdown, though brands were well prepared for the customer turnout this time: security guards, police officers and dogs paced the queues, keeping customers in line and letting in a few at a time once the stores opened.
