A warning has been issued to UK households to check their internet router to keep your network protected and breach free. Most of the UK's Internet Service Providers (ISPs) advise people to keep their routers off the ground and as high up as possible.

However, before you start thinking about placing that flashing black box on the window ledge be warned. One of the reasons to avoid putting your router on the window sill is that when sat in direct sunlight all day, it can quickly overheat and go into shutdown mode, leaving you without any access to the web.

Being situated next to a glass window also means some of that all-important Wi-Fi signal gets beamed straight outside, rather than bouncing around your rooms. It can pose a huge security risk as routers often have the Wi-Fi password printed on the back. This means that neighbours or even passing strangers can hijack the connection.
