Vets share three worrying health issues for pets that have become obese
dailyrecord.co.ukA group of veterinarians have shared some of the worrying issues that can develop if you allow your pet to become overweight.The Upper Canada Animal Hospital (UCAH) shared a new video with their 354,500 followers on TikTok, explaining the issues that surround pet obesity.The vets upload various videos explaining common problems and solutions when owning pets - including stress signs in dogs and cats and what to feed your dog during certain seasons.This time around, the experts explained the possible issues that arise if your pet becomes overweight.
Read on below to find out more.One of the vets noted that "orthopaedic issues" can arise in pets that have become overweight.According to Ortocanis, weight gain causes pain in joints and breathing difficulties.
That lowers your dog's activity level, "thus further benefiting the fatty deposits".They added that due to the sluggishness of the pet, the owner tends to shorten walks and play time in order to not push them too far - which in turn makes their weight gain worse.Another UCAH vet noted that obesity in pets can in turn create "an increased risk of developing diabetes".According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the signs of diabetes in pets include the following:Excessive water drinking and increased urinationWeight loss, even though there may be an increased appetiteDecreased appetiteCloudy eyes (especially in dogs)Chronic or recurring infections (including skin infections and urinary infections)The AVMA said: "Dogs and cats with diabetes usually require lifelong treatment with special diets, a good fitness regimen and, particularly in dogs, daily insulin injections.
