Vera's Aiden Healy star Kenny Doughty explains why he really quit ITV series

Kenny Doughty, who plays DS Aiden Healy in ITV's popular detective series Vera, has revealed why he decided to leave the show after seven years.

The actor will star in The Rising Tide tonight (December 26) alongside co-star Brenda Blethyn, who plays the titular character, DCI Vera Stanhope.

Reflecting on why he decided now was the time to say goodbye to the character of Aiden, Kenny shared there were personal and professional reasons for his departure. "I made the decision before we started filming series 12," he shared. "That was initially going to be the four films screened at the start of 2023.

But then halfway through filming they said, 'Can we do a Christmas special as well?' So it was a long goodbye. With The Rising Tide being my last episode filmed in November and December 2022." Kenny expressed his love for the show, calling it a "life-changing job" as he remarked: "I have loved doing Vera 100%.
