Fifty flood warnings and alerts are in place ahead of a major chill which could see temperatures drop as low as -3C - but will hit up to 15C today.
Rain is set to continue its spread across Britain over the next couple of days before turning to overnight frosts, as many Brits prepare to hole up at home for the foreseeable future, the Met Office has warned.
But the high temperatures in parts of Britain are also set to become a regular feature - until the end of the week, at least.
BBC meteorologist Sarah Keith-Lucas said the "mixed fortunes" weather-wise of the last couple of days with temperatures in parts of England peaking at over 16C, despite "cloud and outbreaks of rain" across Scotland and Northern Ireland, will settle slightly.
