UK on alert with more than 100 flood warnings as Arctic blast brings heavy snow and ice

The UK is on alert for a weekend of winter chaos with freezing temperatures, heavy snow and ice forecast and hundreds of flood warnings in place.

In the wake of Storm Christoph the wet conditions will be replaced by an Arctic blast. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice across much of the UK until shortly before midday today.

As much as four inches of snow is expected in some areas but clear skies between wintry showers will bring the threat of ice.

Met Office chief forecaster Steve Willington said cold air from Iceland and the Arctic will bring with it "a mix of wintry hazards across the UK".
