Laura Muir breaks British 1500m indoor record despite finishing distant second

Laura Muir launched her Olympic year in style by smashing the British indoor 1500 metres record in France last night. In an extraordinary race at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold series in Lievin, the Scot clocked 3:59:58 to regain the record from training partner Jemma Reekie - yet still finished more than six seconds off the pace.

Victory went to Ethiopia’s Guduf Tsegay, who broke Genzebe Dibaba’s world record by over two seconds with a time of 3:53:09.

The mark had stood for seven years and the ease with which Tsegay eclipsed it will rekindle debate about track spike technology changing the face of the sport.
