In an extraordinary race at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold series in Lievin, the Scot clocked 3:59:58 to regain the record from training partner Jemma Reekie - yet still finished more than six seconds off the pace.
Victory went to Ethiopia’s Guduf Tsegay, who broke Genzebe Dibaba’s world record by over two seconds with a time of 3:53:09.
The mark had stood for seven years and the ease with which Tsegay eclipsed it will rekindle debate about track spike technology changing the face of the sport.
