The number of lives lost to Covid-19 in the UK has risen by 1,248 - the third highest daily rise of the pandemic. In the latest figures from the Department of Health, there have been 48,682 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours, down on last Thursday's 52,618 and only slightly up on yesterday's 47,525.
It comes as a senior epidemiologist says some parts of England are showing a plateau in cases of Covid-19, while the rate of growth across the country as a whole is slowing.
Professor Neil Ferguson, whose early modelling of Covid-19 made him a key player in the UK's first lockdown, said he thinks the current wave of the epidemic may be coming under control in some regions.
