The UK's coronavirus hospital death toll has increased by 1,130 - the fourth highest daily rise of the pandemic. England reported 973 new fatalities, Scotland had 92, Wales recorded 49 and Northern Ireland had 16 to take Britain's hospital total to 81,171 The record daily increase for hospital deaths is 1,185, which was set a week ago on January 20.
The second highest total was 1,176 on January 13, also a Wednesday, and the third highest was 1,143 on January 22. By comparison, the tolls announced on previous Wednesdays were 831 on January 6, 556 on December 30 and 535 on December 30.
