I hate wearing sunscreen. There, I said it. I still do it, of course – skin cancer is no laughing matter and UVA is the biggest cause of premature skin ageing, which, when you’re over 40, is about as welcome as losing your hair.
But the smell, the stickiness, the clogging of pores – and the breakouts that proceed – are enough to make me take to the shade with a hat and a good book.
What’s more, a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has shown that some active ingredients in sunscreen may be absorbed by the bloodstream.
Eek. As clever as chemical sunscreens are – they work by absorbing UVA (the ageing rays) and UVB (the burning rays) – some have been accused of disrupting hormones and damaging ocean coral.
