Tributes paid after death of Ayrshire 'curry king' Makhan Singh

Tributes have been paid after Ayrshire curry king Makhan Singh died at the age of 75. A prominent businessman and restauranteur, Makhan and his family have ran a number of premises across the county including the Jewel in Cumnock, the Jewel in the Crown in Kilmarnock and, most recently, Lawthorn Farm in Irvine.

For almost 40 years, the Singh family have brought authentic Indian and Tandoori cuisine to Ayrshire, first in Kilmarnock and Cumnock before opening Lawthorn Farm in 2007.Makhan’s funeral will take place on Tuesday, December 17, at the Clyde Coast and Garnock Valley Crematorium.Announcing the news on social media, the team at Lawthorn Farm said: “It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you the founding father of our establishment Makhan Singh has passed away.“From the Jewel in the Crown in Kilmarnock, to the Jewel in Cumnock and now to The Lawthorn Farm, Makhan’s standards and discipline has created a successful business legacy.“Makhan will forever live on in our hearts.”
