Holidaymakers have been warned to make sure they have cover in place when they go away as figures reveal travel insurers dealt with a new claim every two minutes last year.
According to analysis from the Association of British Insurers (ABI), 362,000 claims were dealt with in 2022, surging by 148 per cent compared with 2021.
Total claim payouts, at £352 million, leapt by 230 per cent on the total recorded by the ABI in 2021. The rise in the number and cost of claims reflected a return to pre-pandemic travel levels, after fewer claims were made due to Covid travel restrictions, the ABI said.
Travellers are being reminded to take details of their insurer when they go abroad as the ABI highlighted several significant payouts made for emergency medical treatment.
