Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has registered his private plane in the US rather than the UK, it has been reported. Registering the plane under the 'light-touch' American system means he benefits from less stringent safety and maintenance rules.
Mr Shapps is a keen pilot, who the Mirror revealed in 2012 had used his private plane to fly to Wales for an appearance on Radio 4 panel programme Any Questions.
His use of the loophole is not illegal but has sparked criticism that he is undermining the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). News website Politico reported that his plane is registered in the US.
