The driver of a train that derailed after it approached a station at 40mph was using his phone just seconds before the crash.

Phillip Hollis claimed he has been distracted by a fallen bag as his train pulled into Kirkby station on March 13 last year.

The train, travelling from Liverpool Central, ploughed into a buffer at the end of the platform causing it to derail and create an estimated £450,000 worth of damage.

Now, a police investigation has revealed that Hollis had sent a message on Whatsapp just moments before, Liverpool Echo reports.
