Leading travel website Thrillist have put together research that shows ten incredibly popular destinations where tourist taxes are "surging".
The taxes take several different forms, but these fees and daily charges all have one key aim: to try and combat the negative impacts of excessive tourism, such as environmental damage or increased costs for locals.
Natalia Bayona, executive director of UN Tourism told National Geographic: “Tourist taxes can play a significant role in how destinations manage tourism flows.
But the implementation of these fees is also designed to deliver more of the economic benefits that tourism offers back to the host communities.”However, these taxes are very varied in how they're applied.
