Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, Tom opened up about those final devastating hours and his ongoing mission to make his family proud.
Tom, along with two-time Olympic champion rower Helen Glover, will have the honour of carrying the British flag during this evening's ceremony.
After that, his focus will shift towards achieving more podium glory as the Games officially kick off under the shadow of Paris' iconic landmarks.
