UK homes could be plunged into darkness this winter, as the National Grid SEO has warned of planned blackouts on "really cold evenings".
The blackouts have been described as a "worst case scenario" by National Grid CEO John Pettigrew. But despite this, the UK government has been taking action to plan some emergency measures in case they do happen.
Programme Yarrow is a confidential plan that will kick into action in the event of blackouts. It was created back in 2021, before Russia's invasion of Ukraine putting a strain on UK gas supplies, the Mirror reports.
The documents warn that all sectors, including transport, food and water supply, communications and energy could be "severely disrupted" for up to a week during the blackouts, according to the Guardian.
