Emergency services are treating three children and an adult following a serious crash on the M66 this afternoon. Two air ambulances, fire crews, paramedics and police have all been deployed to the scene between junction 3 for Pilsworth Road in Hollins to junction 4 for Simister Island.
The motorway has been closed in both directions to allow the air ambulance to land. Footage shows two helicopters landing on the opposite side of the carriageway. The nature of their condition has not been revealed at this stage. Greater Manchester Police have been approached for more information.
Drivers have been urged to stay away from the area as the motorway is expected to remain closed for some time. Pictures from the scene show miles of tailbacks on the southbound side of the motorway, with drivers seen getting out of their cars as traffic came to a standstill.
