Chinese New Year, which is also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is a major festival celebrated at the beginning of the Chinese lunisolar calendar.
It is thought that the Chinese New Year event originated in ancient China around 3,500 years ago, it is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture.
It signals the end of winter and the beginning of the new year. The festival typically happens between 21 January and 20 February, with it falling on Wednesday January 29th this year.
Cultural traditions associated with the event include chucheng (cleaning out your house to remove dust and bad luck), decorating your home with lucky red items such as lanterns, papercuts and spring couplets (chunlian, giving and receiving red envelopes known as hongbao and eating food with family.
