The lift was carrying 15 people when it fell from the highest point of a line which runs between picturesque Lake Maggiore and the summit of the 4,900-ft Mottarone mountain in Italy's Western Alps.

The cable car crashed to the ground about 1,000ft from a station at the top of the mountain as it neared the end of a 20-minute journey from the lakeside town of Stresa, the Mirror reports.
