The pioneering 1971 England women’s team, coined the ‘Lost Lionesses’, have been celebrated at an uplifting event at the National Football Museum in Manchester.
Despite what many understand, the 1971 England Women’s Football team were launched into fame and stardom in the subsequent unofficial Women’s World Cup held in Mexico.
They played in front of 90,000 fans, signed autographs everywhere they went and required a constant police escort. Yet, all women, England national team included, were still prohibited from participating in the sport on home turf - some never to play again.
That tournament was special despite England finishing bottom of their fierce group of the tournament that comprised hosts Mexico and Argentina.
