The Weeknd Ends Grammy Boycott For Surprise Performance
deadline.comNearly four years later, it appears The Weeknd has ended his Grammy boycott. After telling The New York Times in 2021 that he would no longer allow his label to submit him to the awards show, the Recording Academy welcomed the 4x Grammy winner for a surprise performance during the 67th Grammy Awards.
Following an introduction by Harvey Mason Jr., who laid out some of the initiatives the Recording Academy has launched in recent years, The Weeknd performed ‘Timeless’ and ‘Cry for Me’ onstage from his recent sixth studio album Hurry Up Tomorrow.
In the 2021 article, the artist explained he was boycotting the awards show “because of the secret committees. I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.” The Recording Academy previously revealed Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Doechii, Raye, Sabrina Carpenter, Shakira, Teddy Swims, Brad Paisley, Brittany Howard, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Cynthia Erivo, Herbie Hancock, Jacob Collier, Janelle Monáe, John Legend, Lainey Wilson, Sheryl Crow, St.
Vincent and Stevie Wonder as part of the Grammy performance lineup. The awards show will also feature a series of special performances during the In Memoriam segment, a salute to the life and legacy of Quincy Jones and tributes celebrating the spirit of the city of Los Angeles.
