With extreme heat warning and potentially record breaking temperatures, there's no better time for a beach getaway. Cold seawater and a breeze are just the ticket as the mercury could soar over 30C in parts of Scotland.

And thankfully, there are two beach destinations in an easy day trip distance from Edinburgh and Glasgow. Whether you're basking in the heat or hiding from it, these hidden gems of Ayrshire and North Berwick could be the perfect escape.

Indeed, Yellowcraigs beach - recently named by the Sunday Times as one of the best UK beaches - is just over 40 minutes away from Edinburgh and an hour and a half from Glasgow.

For a west coast getaway, Seamill beach is a lesser-known gem in Ayrshire, stretching along the coast at West Kilbride, beside the popular Waterside and Seamill Hydro hotels.
