Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer paid a visit to the Manchester Evening News offices yesterday - and revealed he has ruled out bringing HS2 to the North.
In an exclusive interview with politics writer Joseph Timan, Sir Keir said if his party wins power at the next General Election he will not be reviving the ill-fated plans for a new high-speed railway line between Birmingham and Manchester. “It’s not going to happen,” he said when pressed on the matter.
And while that might not go down well with Andy Burnham, Sir Keir did commit to Northern Powerhouse Rail and also pledged more devolution for Greater Manchester, which could include powers to introduce local taxes.
