Four candidates have been selected to stand for Labour in Greater Manchester just weeks before the general election. Two will be contesting constituencies currently held by the party where the outgoing MPs were last elected with majorities of more than 3,000.

Labour has also selected its candidate to stand in Rochdale which was considered a safe Labour seat until Workers Party of Britain leader George Galloway won a by-election earlier this year.

A new candidate has also been selected to stand in Altrincham and Sale West - the seat held by Tory grandee Sir Graham Brady since 1997 where Labour are hoping to cause a huge election upset on July 4.

It comes after seven Greater Manchester MPs announced that they will not be running for re-election this year. Yvonne Fovargue and Barbara Keeley, the outgoing Labour MPs for Makerfield and Worsley and Eccles South, are the only Labour legislators standing down.
