The Idol will end its first season this Sunday, July 2. The news has come as a surprise to some, with The Weeknd and Sam Levinson's HBO series first described as featuring six episodes when it was ordered to series in November 2021.
Deadline and TVLine report that the number of episodes was altered when Levinson took over from director Amy Seimetz as showrunner and made what were reported at the time as significant "creative changes." The Weeknd has been rolling out new music after each episode of The Idol airs on HBO, most recently sharing a John Lennon cover, plus a collaboration with BLACKPINK's Jennie.
The Idol. Vol 1, which features Lily-Rose Depp's "I'm A Freak" alongside other songs featured in the show, will be released on June 30.
