Hit BBC crime documentary The Detectives returns to our screens this week, with cameras following Greater Manchester Police’s dedicated organised crime unit in Rochdale.

During the three-part series, DS Martin Soutter and his officers are trying to dismantle the Adam gang — based on the Newbold Estate in Rochdale.

Episode one of the show sees officers grapple with a horrific axe attack. Following a ‘minor’ road rage incident, tree surgeon Cameron Brooksbank attempted to calm the situation.

The then-18-year-old was struck by an axe in the armpit, and then on the wrist as he tried to shield his head from another blow. Cameron’s hand was partially reattached, but then required a further five surgeries in the two years since the attack just to maintain 60 percent use of his arm.
