Tesco scraps netting after fury over 'trapped dead pigeons' in seaside town

Tesco has removed the netting at a supermarket after shoppers were furious pigeons had got caught in it and died. The supermarket said the netting was initially put in place "as a safety and hygiene measure to prevent pigeons from accessing the roof space and dropping faeces onto the customer area below." But customers reported seeing dead birds above the store in Hove, East Sussex, after they'd become trapped in the mesh.

Furious animal rights activists said they dreaded 'to think how long the birds were left to suffer'. And shoppers made their feelings clear with a protest outside the supermarket on Saturday.
