Olivia Dean has spoken to NME about her Mercury-shortlisted album ‘Messy’, as well as going to school with fellow nominee RAYE and penning the England Women’s World Cup anthem, ‘Call Me A Lioness’. Watch our interview above.The London singer-songwriter was speaking at the launch of the Mercury Prize 2023, where her 2023 debut was shortlisted alongside albums by the likes of Arctic Monkeys, J Hus, Jessie Ware, Young Fathers and Shygirl.Dean told NME about how she was “overwhelmed” and “shocked” to be shortlisted, but “trying to be present and take it all in”.“Can you believe it? It only came out three weeks ago! I’m like, ‘Guys! Give me a sec!’,” she said.Asked about the character of the album, Dean told NME: “Hopefully, it captures a message of allowing yourself to be imperfect. I really enjoyed that I made an album that feels human and doesn’t feel processed or that it was made by 100 people over email.

In partnership with DHLOlivia Dean and DHL FAST-TRACK have unveiled a new mini-documentary, charting the BRIT-nominated artist’s recent journey to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.The 25-year-old and DHL FAST-TRACK announced their partnership last month. The collaboration saw Dean join DHL in Rio de Janeiro, where she reunited with Vivendo Um Sonho Surf (VUSS), a community-focused surf school in the city’s Rocinha favela.Alongside spending time with the children of VUSS, Dean performed tracks from her 2023 debut album ‘Messy’ at an intimate show delivered by DHL at the Fundição Progresso venue in the city’s renowned music district.

The Last Dinner Party have been named the winner of the BBC’s Sound of 2024 poll.The London-based indie band and NME 100 alumni, made up of Abigail Morris, Lizzie Mayland, Emily Roberts, Georgia Davies and Aurora Nishevci, were chosen as winners by a panel of over 140 music industry experts and artists.The band beat out Olivia Dean, who came second, and Peggy Gou, Tyla and Elmiene, who rounded out the top five spots.The achievement follows a massive breakout year for the band, who featured on NME’s The Cover in December.In that interview, they opened up about their meteoric rise, saying, “It can feel a bit like going in a car really fast and not being in charge of the steering wheel. We’re trying to ignore the words ‘hype’ and ‘buzzy band’ and just focus on what grounds us: playing, writing and rehearsing our music.”Speaking about topping the list, the band said: “We are overjoyed to have won BBC Radio 1’s Sound Of Award for 2024! Jools Holland‘s traditional New Year’s Eve show on BBC2 has been announced.Jools’ Annual Hootenanny will see the likes of Rod Stewart, Joss Stone, Olivia Dean, Paul Jones, P.P. Arnold, RAYE, Sugababes and The Mary Wallopers seeing in 2024.Other guests include Boogie Woogie Queen, Ruby Turner and as always, the Pipes & Drums of the 1st Battalion Scot Guards will feature, as the hour strikes midnight.Details of which songs the artists will perform on the night are yet to be announced.This year’s show will air from 11.30pm GMT on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer this Sunday (December 31).

Olivia Dean has expanded her forthcoming tour in support of her debut studio album, ‘Messy’.The tour, which is scheduled to begin next April, was originally announced in late June with shows in Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham. Since the initial shows were announced, Dean has sold out her shows in both Leeds and Manchester.Yesterday (August 31), the singer extended her run with an additional eight shows, including three in the UK and five through mainland Europe.
