The Supreme Court made a huge ruling on Friday (June 24). The court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending federal protection of abortion rights.
The ruling will leave the question of abortion rights to the states. Since there is now no federal protection, it’s expected now that more than half of U.S.
states may eventually make abortion fully illegal. Justice Samuel Alito renounced the 1973 decision in the draft opinion. “The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any Constitutional provision … It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives,” he wrote.
The majority party included votes from Chief Justice John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett.
