Members of Crosshouse Parish Church, together with the local community, got together to knit and crochet poppies for a display outside and inside Crosshouse Church for remembrance this year. The Crosshouse War Memorial, which stands on the grounds of Crosshouse Church, remembers some fifty-two fallen in the Great War of 1914-18 and twenty from the 2nd World War, 1939-45.
It was decided that a display of crocheted and knitted poppies would be appropriate, with thoughts of creating two or three hundred poppies to hang on the front railings of the church. The response exceeded the group's expectations and almost 6,000 poppies were received, allowing to create larger displays. The results are two displays outside the church, replicating a river of poppies flowing from the front window, around the War Memorial and across the grass.
A large poppy wreath hangs at the entrance at the front door. Inside the church, an eight-foot-high wooden Cross has been covered in poppies and the Primary School has completed the fall for the Communion Table.
There are also poppy hangings and other displays.A spokesperson from Crosshouse Parish Church said: "Early in the year, members of Crosshouse Parish Church were seeking a project which would honour all those who fell in the conflicts of the 20th century, and indeed into the 21st Century."So, in late March the word was spread in the local community that a Poppy Project Group was to meet fortnightly to knit, crochet, chat and have tea and cakes! "To the amazement of the three or four who initiated the project, as many as twenty women and men joined in each meeting.
