Storm Éowyn will bring severe gales across most of the UK this weekend. The Met Office has issued a rare red ‘danger to life’ weather alert ahead of the storm as it forecasts "very dangerous conditions and significant disruption" from the strong winds.

The first storm of 2025 is expected to be the worst of the season so far, bringing a “weather bomb” of strong winds, heavy rain and snow to the UK.

Storm Éowyn looks to be particularly potent, but experts warn that extreme storms will become more intense and frequent for the UK.

Wind is just movement of air in the atmosphere that is forced to move by differences in atmospheric pressure. The UK is particularly prone to wind storms because of something called the jetstream, a band of strong winds around 30,000ft above the Earth’s surface.
