Stop and search powers introduced across Manchester to prevent 'serious violence'

Stop and search powers have been introduced across a large part of Manchester in an effort to try and prevent 'serious violence'.

The powers last for 24 hours, from 9.30pm on Saturday (September 2) until 9.30pm on Sunday (September 3). Parts of Stretford, Moss Side, Whalley Range and Chorlton are among the areas covered by the Section 60, that give officers the powers to search anyone within a specified area with an increased number of officers patrolling the streets.

It comes as a teenager was 'stabbed in the back' and left seriously injured following a fight during an event at the Love Factory, near the Green Quarter, on Saturday evening. Greater Manchester Police said the Section 60 was implemented to 'assist officers in preventing serious violence following a section 18 assault' at the premises.

Roads included within the perimeter are Mancunian Way, Princess Road, Bridgewater Way, Park Way, Chester Road, M60 and Princess Road.
