Scottish Government has been urged to back the creation of a new tsar to promote the rights of older people.Other parts of the UK have a dedicated commissioner for senior citizens, but no post exists in Scotland.Labour MSP Monica Lennon said: “We can’t change the past but we can build a future where the rights of our oldest citizens will always be respected and protected.“Committing to the appointment of an independent commissioner for older people would be an important first step and all political parties should support this.”Older people have been at the centre of the covid-19 tragedy, with thousands dying in care homes.Critics believe the Government should have done more to protect the elderly in the early weeks of the pandemic.Ageism.
