Sliding Doors explores the consequences that lie behind split second decisions, and the concept proved to be a hit with audiences even if critics met its release with mixed reviews. The film, which came out in 1998, starred a then 24 year old Gwyneth Paltrow, who recently won a ski crash lawsuit, and John Hannah, who had shot to fame a few years earlier when he scored a part in Hugh Grant’s hit romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral.Their characters meet by chance on the London Underground, and the film explores two alternate realities where Gwyneth’s character Helen either makes or misses her tube train. The film is about to turn 25 and, over the years, a few of the film’s stars and production team have opened up about some of the on-set secrets.

Director Peter Howitt shared that he had clashed with Gwyneth Paltrow behind the scenes, and that she had once told him to “just let it go, Pete” when he insisted on shooting and reshooting a handful of scenes.

It was Peter’s directing debut, so he was understandably keen to make sure everything went smoothly. He’s since gone on to director hit comedy film Johnny English in 2003 and Laws of Attraction, a romantic comedy which starred Pierce Brosnan.

Meanwhile, Gwyneth’s leading man John Hannah also revealed that the famously fussy actress was horrified when he introduced her to the iconic British chip butty.
