One pup had to be out down when a litter of six was found abandoned in a taped-up cardboard box stuffed in a hedge. All six were in very poor health when they were discovered last week and one - weighing just 500 grams - could not be saved, according to the RSPCA.

The unwanted five-week-old pets were abandoned in a cardboard box with words 'Xmas Decs Upstairs' written on the top stuffed in a hedge in Ellesmere Port last Thursday, August 24. Now the animal welfare charity RSPCA is appealing for information to establish how the animals ended up abandoned and in such a poor condition.

All six pups were taken to the RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital but one was so poorly he had to be put down. The rest are receiving round-the-clock care to nurse them back to health.

The black pups were discovered in a hedge by a passer-by in a park near Frome Court in Ellesmere Court. RSPCA inspector Anthony Joynes, who transported the puppies to the charity’s animal hospital, said: "Thankfully, the remaining puppies are responding well to treatment, though it’s going to be a long road to recovery. "They are all underweight and dehydrated, and have a high worm burden, which is a lot for a tiny puppy to fight.
