With temperatures dropping across the UK, households are feeling the strain of higher heating bills. But according to Stephen Day, a heating engineer from iHeat, many homeowners have their boilers set too high by default.
A boiler's flow temperature is the temperature of the water that's sent to radiators, and many boilers are automatically set at a high flow temperature of 70 to 80C.
While this ensures fast heating, it wastes energy as excess heat escapes through the boiler flue. Changing just one setting to affect the boiler's flow temperature can make a huge difference. “Lowering the flow temperature of your boiler is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to improve boiler efficiency,” says Stephen. “It’s a quick adjustment that can save energy and money without sacrificing home comfort.
