Lesley Manville, the star of The Crown, has opened up about her love for portraying strong, fearless, and flamboyant female characters.

At 68, Lesley feels that age doesn't limit her as she enjoys a thriving period in her acting journey. Reflecting on her remarkable 50-year career during an event at London's V&A museum, she expressed her appreciation for her versatile talents. "Women are seeing actresses of an age being fabulous," Lesley, who took on the role of Princess Margaret in Netflix's hit series The Crown and transformed into a chic cleaning lady in the 2022 movie Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, shared with fans. "I don't dress inappropriately but I want the freedom to dress how I'd like," she told The Mirror. "Fortunately, some parts that I now play represent women who are able to say I am this age, yes I'm still sexually active, yes I want to dress how I want, yes I want to be thought of bold and brave and outrageous if we want to be.

It's so boring otherwise." Lesley, who trained at the prestigious Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, reminisced about her early days on Emmerdale Farm where she played Rosemary Kendall at just 18.

She fondly recalled, "It got me my first flat. Then I went to the theatre earning £80 a week." She left the show to appear at the Royal Court Theatre, where she would come to know renowned writer and director Mike Leigh.
