Seven arrests at Ayrshire beach in relation to fighting, alcohol abuse and disorder

Seven people were arrested in connection with a series of unsavoury incidents on Irvine beach on Saturday. Ayrshire police swooped on youngsters abusing alcohol, engaging in fighting and causing disorder on the coast.

The news emerges after a 15-year-old boy was seriously assaulted on Saturday at Irvine beach at around 5pm by a gang. The seven arrests are unrelated to the teenager being attacked.A heavy police presence was felt across Ayrshire's coastal towns over the weekend as temperatures soared.Cops took booze off of teenagers boarding trains to come to Ayrshire to bask in the heatwave but despite the pro-active measure, some youths drank to excess and engaged in anti-social behaviour.The increased police presence was part of the Safer Shores initiative.A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “This operation is not about spoiling fun or denying anyone the right to have a good time.

We are here to ensure that fun doesn’t turn into trouble, with people drinking to excess or becoming anti-social or abusive.”“Our officers have confiscated large quantities of alcohol from a number of teenagers looking to board trains towards beaches in Ayrshire.”“Despite this, there have still been examples of people drinking to excess, causing disorder and these incidents have been managed appropriately and proportionately”.Don't miss the latest Ayrshire headlines –sign up to our free daily newsletter here
