Senior Manchester North coroner appointed Deputy Chief Coroner

A senior coroner sitting in Rochdale has been appointed as a Deputy Chief Coroner of England and Wales. Joanne Kearsley, who sits at Rochdale Coroner's Court in the town centre, was appointed an Assistant Coroner in Manchester South in 2008 then an Area Coroner in 2009.

In May, 2017, she was appointed Senior Coroner for the District of Manchester North. Ms Kearsley has presided over some of the most high-profile inquest hearings in the Rochdale, Bury and Oldham areas, including the inquest into the death of Rochdale two year-old Awaab Ishak, who died after being exposed to mould at his home in the town in 2020. It's in succession to Her Honour Judge Alexia Durran's appointment to Chief Coroner and the retirement of Senior Coroner Derek Winter.

The appointments, made by the Lady Chief Justice and Lord Chancellor under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, take effect on 1 January 2025 for a three-year term.
