UPDATE: The Senate is poised to vote on the debt ceiling bill after leaders reached an agreement for a speedier process to ensure that the legislation gets to Joe Biden’s desk before a Monday deadline and prevent a default of the U.S.
economy. Multiple news outlets reported that the agreement will allow opponents and other critics of the bill to introduce a series of amendments, all of which are not likely to pass.
The votes are scheduled to begin this evening. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that the agreement will allow the Senate to pass the legislation tonight. “Let’s keep this process moving quickly,” he said, adding that “by passing this bill, we can avoid default tonight.” Biden returned to the White House after falling at a ceremony at the Air Force Academy’s commencement ceremony.
White House officials said that the president tripped over a sandbag on the stage while he was shaking hands. He was not harmed, but the fall was a top story in cable news coverage this afternoon. “I got sandbagged,” Biden said to reporters as he arrived on the South Lawn of the White House.
