Airdrie councillor Sophia Coyle says she has left the SNP “with a heavy heart”, going on to vote with the Labour administration at the second meeting confirming this month’s power switch at North Lanarkshire Council.

She cited “infighting and bullying” as she left the party ahead of last week’s special meeting to elect a new provost and depute – which saw Labour councillor Kenny Duffy take the civic head role, while Bob Burgess becomes the first Conservative depute provost in the authority’s history.

The two roll calls were respectively decided by two votes and one vote, with the Labour administration also installing its own new set of conveners to replace the SNP team which was ousted from the helm of the local authority after just 12 weeks in the series of events following the resignation of former leader Jordan Linden. The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.
