Steve Clarke into thinking he’s cracked the international code. But at least Scotland’s manager brought the curtain down on a topsy-turvy first week of World Cup qualifiers with reason to believe he was probably getting pretty close to doing it in the first place.

When he decided to shape his team up around a three-men central defence for the Euro play-offs it came as something of a surprise, not least to Scott McTominay and Kieran Tierney who were asked to be two of them.

Yes, there were some initial teething troubles but Clarke stuck to his guns and in doing so he triumphantly led the country into a first finals in 23 years.But too much thinking time can often be the curse of the international manager.
