Pupils at a Scots school were evacuated today amid claims men with machetes were spotted on the school's grounds. It has been claimed that men wearing balaclavas were noticed near Boclair Academy, in Bearsden, carrying machete-style weapons.

Staff at the East Dunbartonshire school sent a text message to some parents, letting them know that some pupils would be sent home later than usual, reports the Glasgow Times.

East Dunbartonshire Council has confirmed that "a health and safety incident" took place but has not confirmed or provided details about the claims there were individuals with weapons.

Ann Davie, Depute Chief Executive, East Dunbartonshire Council, said: "An evacuation at Boclair Academy took place this afternoon due to a health and safety issue reported."Pupils were mustered for safety as a precaution and were dismissed slightly later than usual once the issue was investigated and the building was deemed safe to re-enter. “During the evacuation two males were spotted within the school grounds and were asked to leave.
